Hanwritten defeats Ball of Muscle
Nov 23, 2013
The Bjorn Baker trained Hanwritten lived up to the big wraps in easily winning the Thorzt Electrolyte Maiden at Newcastle over 900 metres today.
The 3yo gelded son of Written Tycoon is raced by Iskander Racing and a partnership managed by Cobbitty Lodge. The horse has shown a lot of ability to his trainer but been held back due to growing pains.
“I’ve always had a really nice opinion of this horse and it was good to finally produce him. He showed me a lot from day one but we’ve just had to wait until he matured,” said Baker
Hanwritten has twice had campaigns halted, first by open knees and then by shin soreness.
“He’s a big strong robust horse and has just had growing pains. We think very highly of him and have really tried to look after him,”
Hanwritten jumped well from barrier 1 for jockey Chad Lever, quickly mustering speed and setting a solid pace with race favourite Ball of Muscle.
The pair cleared away from the rest of the field approaching the turn and engaged in a two horse war before Hanwritten prevailed by 1.5 lengths with a further 3 lengths away to 3rd placed Seal of Approval.
Although successful, Hanwritten did race quite green in the straight and showed his inexperience.
“He ran about a bit in the straight but that’s just being new, he will improve a lot from that and will only get better,” said Baker
Hanwritten is a homebred for Iskander Racing and partner Joseph Camilleri, and hails from the 3rd crop of exciting stallion Written Tycoon.
The 3yo is a full brother to Brisbane metropolitan winner Smasher, a horse that has shown good ability for the Robert Heathcote stable.
Hanwritten’s dam, Ras El Hanout, is an unplaced daughter of former Widden Stud stallion Honours List (IRE).
This is a cross that has worked successfully on a number of occasions, also producing city performers Tamban as well as Written Above All.
Ras El Hanout herself is a full sister to Silent Power, a Group 2 placed 2yo who was sold to Hong Kong interests for a six figure sum and has raced successfully there as Chater Power.
Ras El Hanout has a Ferocity yearling filly on the ground and this year delivered a bay filly to Sunday Silence horse Keep the Faith.
